YEREVAN — From March 21 to 31, Armenia will temporarily open the “Margara” border crossing with Turkey to facilitate the transportation of humanitarian aid to Syria.

The decision was made as part of the government’s non-reportable agenda items.

“As a result of working meetings between representatives of the relevant authorities of the Republic of Armenia and the Syrian Arab Republic, an agreement was reached to discuss Armenia’s provision of humanitarian assistance to Syria.

The adoption of this decision is necessary to transport humanitarian aid shipments from Armenia to Syria via Turkey by land,” the decision states.

The “Margara” border crossing between Armenia and Turkey was last opened in February 2023. Following the devastating earthquake in southeastern Turkey on February 6, Armenia sent rescue teams and humanitarian aid to the country via the land border.

In July 2022, Armenia and Turkey agreed to open their land border for citizens of third countries as soon as possible. However, this decision has yet to be implemented.

The land border between Armenia and Turkey has remained closed since 1993.
