KAZAN — Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, in Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
Pashinyan reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to strengthening its relations with neighboring Iran. The Prime Minister praised the dynamic nature of these relations, noting that since President Pezeshkian took office, this momentum has not only been maintained but also expanded. He emphasized that enhancing ties with Iran remains a key priority for the Armenian government.
According to Pezeshkian’s office, Pashinyan stated, “Armenia will continue to expand its good relations with Iran under any circumstances.” The Iranian president described Armenia as a “friend and good neighbor.”
Pezeshkian also spoke extensively about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, as well as the threat of an escalation involving Lebanon’s Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement. He accused the West of supporting what he described as “the Zionist regime’s genocide in Gaza and attacks against the Lebanese people.”
The official statements did not mention whether the two leaders discussed Azerbaijan’s continued demands for an extraterritorial land corridor to its Nakhichevan exclave, which would pass through Armenia’s Syunik region, bordering Iran. Tehran remains strongly opposed to the so-called “Zangezur corridor,” fearing the potential loss of its direct border with Armenia.
