YEREVAN — The provision establishing Armenian as the sole official language of the Republic of Armenia will become unamendable under the proposed new Constitution, National Assembly Speaker Ruben Rubinyan announced.
In a statement published on social media, Rubinyan explained that the proposed constitutional change would permanently protect Armenian’s status as the country’s only official language.
“Unlike under the current Constitution, it will no longer be possible to amend this article, change the official language, or introduce additional official languages,” Rubinyan stated.
He emphasized that the measure is intended to safeguard one of the most fundamental pillars of Armenian national identity.
“In this way, we will protect the main pillar of our national identity—our language,” he said.
Rubinyan reaffirmed that the Republic of Armenia would continue to have only one official language: Armenian.
“The Republic of Armenia will have one official language—Armenian—and we will do everything possible to ensure that the opposition does not obstruct the adoption of this amendment,” he declared.
