YEREVAN — The History Museum of Armenia has opened a new exhibition titled “Armineh Johannes: Moments of Armenia’s Independence,” featuring more than 100 photographs by Armenian Diaspora photographer Armineh Johannes, taken across Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The exhibition, dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Armenia’s independence, presents a unique visual chronicle of the country’s path to statehood and everyday life during a transformative period in its modern history. Johannes’ photographs are displayed alongside a selection of symbolic artifacts from the museum’s collection.

The collection is being exhibited in Armenia for the first time and captures key moments surrounding the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenia’s independence movement, and the lives of ordinary Armenians during those historic years.

Johannes first visited Armenia in 1989, one year after the devastating Spitak earthquake. The visit marked the beginning of a lifelong connection with the country and its people. She later traveled extensively throughout Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, documenting both historic events and daily life.

Among the most significant moments she photographed was Armenia’s declaration of independence in 1991, when she was present in parliament to witness what she described as the official birth of the Republic of Armenia.

Reflecting on her work, Johannes said the photographs represent one of the most emotional and complete bodies of work she has produced during her career. She noted that the images form a small but important visual chapter in the history of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, preserving memories of a pivotal era through the lens of personal experience and human connection.

The exhibition is organized through a collaboration between the History Museum of Armenia and Armineh Johannes and offers visitors a rare opportunity to revisit the years surrounding Armenia’s independence through powerful historical photography and museum artifacts.
