BATUMI — At the European Weightlifting Championships taking place in Batumi, Georgia, Armenia’s Garik Karapetyan and Simon Martirosyan competed in the 110 kg weight category.
Garik Karapetyan completed the snatch with a lift of 189 kg, setting a new European Championship record and earning a small bronze medal. In the clean and jerk, the Armenian weightlifter successfully lifted 226 kg overhead, securing a small gold medal. With a combined total of 415 kg, he claimed first place overall, becoming a three-time European champion.
“Every medal is extremely important to me—from the Armenian Championships to the World Championships. These medals mean a great deal to us, especially during this difficult period, as we are able to raise our flag and bring joy to the Armenian people, our families, relatives, and friends. After the snatch, knowing the strength of the Bulgarian and Romanian athletes, I expected to win because I knew they were weaker in the clean and jerk. My main goal has always been and will remain the Olympic Games. My most vivid memory of victory was in Armenia in 2023. Becoming European champion at home for the first time was the most memorable moment of my career. Today, those emotions have tripled,” said the three-time European champion.
Simon Martirosyan, in turn, lifted 183 kg in the snatch and 215 kg in the clean and jerk. With a total of 398 kg, the Armenian weightlifter finished the competition in 6th place.
