BATUMI — Olympic silver medalist and two-time world champion Varazdat Lalayan has been crowned European champion for the third time in his career. Competing in the super heavyweight division at the European Weightlifting Championships held in Batumi, Georgia, Lalayan secured the gold medal with a total lift of 451 kg.
He also dominated the individual lifts. In the snatch, the Armenian weightlifter successfully lifted 210 kg, while in the clean and jerk he raised 241 kg, finishing first in both events.
It should be noted that Armenia competed at the European Championships with a team of 16 athletes—8 men and 8 women.
Among Armenia’s representatives, Emma Poghosyan and Garik Karapetyan were also crowned champions. Garnik Cholakyan, Alexandra Grigoryan, Gor Sahakyan, and Ara Aghanyan won silver medals in the total. Martin Poghosyan earned a bronze medal.
Armenia’s men’s national team won the European Championships team standings for the second consecutive year, while the women’s team placed third overall.
