YEREVAN — Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan received an EU delegation today, led by European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas, according to the government’s press service.
Pashinyan noted that Schinas’ visit is expected to enhance discussions on the Armenia-EU cooperation agenda and further strengthen the partnership between the two. He emphasized that this is an important moment for EU-Armenia relations.
“I am glad that there are notable advances in our relations: negotiations on visa liberalization are starting, and a decision has been made to support Armenia through the European Peace Facility, which we highly appreciate,” he said.
Pashinyan stated that Armenia is expanding its agenda with the European Union. He also mentioned that, following his speech in the European Parliament last year, discussions are underway in Armenia regarding the possibility of starting the process for Armenia’s accession to the EU.
“This is not an easy issue, but it has become part of Armenia’s political agenda, so it should be approached in detail and comprehensively. It is important to listen to the observations and advice of our EU partners,” the prime minister added.
Schinas emphasized the European Union’s interest in developing relations with Armenia and promoting its reforms. He also expressed hope for effective cooperation with the Armenian government in the ongoing dialogue about visa regime liberalization.
The two sides also discussed a set of issues related to the implementation of agreements reached during a high-level meeting in Brussels on April 5 of this year, which included the Armenian Prime Minister, the President of the European Commission, and the US Secretary of State.
The parties exchanged views on other issues of regional importance as well.
