VINENNA – The heads of all six factions of the National Council of Austria agreed on the Armenian Genocide recognition resolution that will be officially announced on April 22.

The draft resolution clearly condemns the mass murder of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire 100 years ago, characterizing it as Genocide and calls on Turkey to face the history and recognize the Armenian Genocide.

The statement also emphasizes the historical responsibility of Austria, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire allied with the Ottoman Empire during WWI.

The National Council is one of the two houses of the Austrian parliament and, as a practical matter, is decidedly more powerful than the Federal Council.
