YEREVAN – Dutch football specialist John van ‘t Schip has been appointed as the head coach of the Armenia national team, according to the official website of the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA). Former Netherlands player Aron Winter will serve as his assistant coach.

FFA President Armen Melikbekyan introduced John van ‘t Schip to the members of the FFA Executive Committee today, where his candidacy was officially approved.

The 61-year-old coach will assume his duties on March 1. His contract follows a 1+1 scheme, meaning an initial one-year term with the possibility of an extension.

Coaching Career

John van ‘t Schip has previously managed his hometown club, AFC Ajax, as well as the Greece national team. He also served as an assistant coach to Marco van Basten for the Netherlands national team from 2004 to 2008. In 2016, he guided Melbourne City to victory in the Australian Cup.

Playing Career

  • Netherlands National Team: 41 appearances, 2 goals
  • AFC Ajax (1981–1992): 273 appearances, 29 goals
  • Genoa (Italy, 1992–1996): 107 appearances, 11 goals

As a player, van ‘t Schip was part of the Netherlands squad that won the 1988 UEFA European Championship. With Ajax, he won:

  • 4 Eredivisie titles (1981–82, 1982–83, 1984–85, 1989–90)
  • 3 KNVB Cups (1982–83, 1985–86, 1986–87)
  • 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup (1986–87)
  • 1 UEFA Cup (1991–92)

His extensive experience as both a player and coach brings high expectations for his tenure with the Armenian national team.
