YEREVAN — Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that Amazon is prepared to make investments in Armenia, provided the country can guarantee the continuous and reliable electricity supply required for the company’s operations.
In an interview with Infocom, Pashinyan referred to a letter he had received from the Minister of High-Tech Industry outlining the company’s energy requirements.
According to the prime minister, Amazon has indicated that a major investment would depend on the availability of a power generation facility with a capacity of approximately 1,000 megawatts.
“Amazon is ready to invest in Armenia, but it needs a 1,000-megawatt power plant. The company says that if Armenia can guarantee such a facility, it will make an investment of a corresponding scale,” Pashinyan explained.
The prime minister did not specify the potential investment amount, the nature of the proposed project, or a timetable for its implementation.
He emphasized that the company’s operations would require a stable, uninterrupted electricity supply around the clock.
In this context, Pashinyan discussed the importance of developing additional energy infrastructure, including nuclear power generation, energy storage systems and wind farms.
The prime minister also revealed that the electricity requirements of artificial intelligence projects already approved in Armenia exceed the country’s existing energy capacity.
He said these growing demands, together with prospective investments in advanced technologies, have increased the government’s interest in constructing a new nuclear power plant with greater generating capacity.
Pashinyan’s remarks highlight the increasingly important role of energy infrastructure in Armenia’s efforts to attract major international technology investments and expand its artificial intelligence industry.
