KOTAYK — “August 8 did not fall from the sky. I went to Istanbul and held negotiations with Azerbaijan in Abu Dhabi,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a campaign stop in Kotayk.

“Years ago, when we were not speaking with either Azerbaijan or Turkey, whenever we needed to convey something to Azerbaijan, we would send a message through a third country and receive a response through a third country. After some time, we realized something was wrong. We later understood that neither our message was reaching its destination correctly, nor was their response coming back to us accurately. There are nuances that only someone constantly involved in the process understands. Someone who entered the process five minutes ago does not understand those nuances and ends up transmitting messages in a distorted or altered form,” Pashinyan said.

He said Armenia had decided it must learn to live independently in its own environment and resolve its issues as independently as possible. “This does not mean that we are drawing a border and isolating ourselves from the international community,” he added.

“Ultimately, peace was established on August 8 in Washington, with the support and participation of U.S. President Trump. But this became possible for one reason: at the end of March 2025, Armenia and Azerbaijan announced that they had completed negotiations on the text of the peace agreement. In other words, we already had an agreed text ready for signing,” Pashinyan said.

“After that, my first working visit to Turkey took place. I went to Istanbul and spoke about our strategies. Then, on July 10, our bilateral meeting with Azerbaijan took place in Abu Dhabi. August 8 did not happen by chance. It was the culmination of our bilateral work. Of course, President Trump’s direct involvement played a very important and significant role,” he said.
