YEREVAN — “This is our sovereign decision, and we will make our sovereign decisions,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on May 28 during a briefing, addressing discussions surrounding Armenia’s relations with the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union.
Pashinyan stressed that Armenia has never announced any intention to withdraw from the EAEU. At the same time, he said that as long as EAEU membership and the process of moving closer to the European Union remain compatible, Armenia will continue moving forward on that path.
“That compatibility may last until 2030, 2035, or 2040. It may last until December 2026 or June 2027. Time will tell,” Pashinyan said.
He emphasized that any decision will be made exclusively based on Armenia’s sovereign interests.
The prime minister also addressed challenges in the export sector, noting that they are not new and have existed before. According to him, Armenia will continue supporting only those producers that operate in line with international standards.
“There is a market of seven billion people in the world for products that meet standards,” Pashinyan said, adding that many markets are currently open to Armenia, including those in the European Union.
Speaking about the letter received from the Russian side concerning the 2013 gas agreement, Pashinyan said similar letters have been received several times over the past eight years. He noted that Armenia has experience, formats, and formulas for working through such issues.
“I am confident that this time, too, solutions will be found through constructive dialogue,” Pashinyan said.
