YEREVAN — The Anti-Corruption Court of Armenia has ordered the detention of Alexander Sargsyan, the brother of former Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan.

According to the court, the investigative body submitted a motion on February 24, 2026, requesting detention as a preventive measure.

“On the same day, the court reviewed the motion despite the accused’s whereabouts being unknown. Considering the risk of flight to be significant, the court granted the request and ordered detention. If A. Sargsyan is located and comes under the jurisdiction of Armenia, the issue of detention will be reconsidered by the court,” the Anti-Corruption Court said in a statement.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia reported that a prosecutor has initiated public criminal prosecution against Alexander Sargsyan under Article 46–256, Part 3, Clause 3 of the Criminal Code (incitement to embezzlement of entrusted property). Detention has been imposed as a preventive measure, and Sargsyan has been placed on a wanted list.

Alexander Sargsyan is accused of committing large-scale embezzlement during the period when his brother, Serzh Sargsyan, served as Armenia’s defense minister.

According to law enforcement authorities, between 2001 and 2018 Sargsyan allegedly used his influence to facilitate the embezzlement of particularly large sums of state funds entrusted to him. Investigators say that through his official connections and family ties, conditions were created that allowed the misappropriation of significant funds allocated from the state budget.
