DAVOS — Armenia has submitted a request to Azerbaijan regarding the transit of cargo from Armenia to Russia, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in Davos.
“In effect, we have unilaterally opened the corridors. It is true that cargo transportation is currently carried out through Georgian territory, but the day will come when Armenian cargo passes directly through the territory of Azerbaijan—and that day is not far off,” Aliyev stated.
Armenia’s Ministry of Economy has previously announced that Armenia will soon begin importing Russian liquefied gas by rail via Azerbaijani territory.
According to Aliyev, both Baku and Yerevan “must demonstrate more clearly the benefits of peaceful coexistence.”
The Azerbaijani leader also addressed Armenian-Turkish relations, noting that the normalization process is moving forward in parallel with Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations.
“Of course, these processes will conclude simultaneously with the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia, as well as between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” he added.
At the end of the year, Yerevan and Ankara announced that they had eased visa issuance procedures for holders of diplomatic, special, and service passports. Meanwhile, Turkish media reported renovation work at the Alican border crossing on the Turkey–Armenia border. Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency reported that work at the crossing is nearly complete.
