WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. President Donald Trump described the signing of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington as “historic,” emphasizing the great economic importance of the deal and noting that the project to reopen transport links between the two countries has been named after him.
He made these remarks during a meeting with the leaders of five Central Asian countries, according to a video released by The Associated Press.
“Three months ago, my administration also mediated a historic peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. That was one of eight wars we managed to stop within eight months,” said the U.S. President.
Trump also referred to the ‘Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity’ project.
Addressing leaders from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, Trump said that the emerging road “goes through some of the most important places economically anywhere in the world”, adding that it “will boost commercial activity on the other side of the Caspian Sea, helping nations throughout Central Asia.”
“I’m optimistic that each of the countries here today will reap the benefits of peace if they embrace the opportunity that we’ve unleashed with the [Armenian-Azerbaijani] agreement,” he added.
“As I said at the time, this historic agreement includes the construction of a new Trump Route. It’s such a beautiful thing. They named it after me, and I truly appreciate that. It means a lot. It’s a new Trump Route — a route for international peace. This road passes through some of the most important regions of the world, economically among the most significant,” Trump stressed.
He added that the initiative would greatly stimulate trade across the opposite shore of the Caspian Sea, helping the countries of Central Asia. The U.S. President expressed hope that each of those nations would benefit from the opportunities opened up by this agreement.
