India and Armenia are nearing the signing of a multi-billion-dollar defense agreement valued between $3.5 and $4 billion, according to sources cited by Republic World. The document envisions cooperation in the defense industry, focusing on the modernization of Armenia’s air defense, missile systems, and artillery capabilities.
The Indian side is reportedly considering the sale of next-generation Akash-NG surface-to-air missile systems to Armenia. This model has a longer range and could become the first line of defense in Armenia’s air defense network. Previously, Armenia had acquired short-range variants of the Akash system.
Additionally, the talks include discussions on the joint production of BrahMos missiles in Armenia, as well as the delivery of a new batch of Pinaka multiple rocket launcher systems. The first such delivery took place in 2023.
It should be noted that since 2022, India has become Armenia’s primary defense industry partner, supplying anti-tank systems, howitzers, and counter-drone technologies. Although official Yerevan has recently announced plans to reduce military spending, the ongoing negotiations indicate that defense cooperation with India remains a top strategic priority.
