YEREVAN — The so-called “Zangezur Corridor” poses a threat to both Armenia and Iran, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani stated during a press conference today in Yerevan. He emphasized that Tehran strongly opposes any route that operates under a “corridor logic.”

“Only Armenia and Iran share the same perspective on the so-called ‘Zangezur Corridor.’ Iran is the only country in the region standing firmly with Armenia against it,” Sobhani noted. “There is no disagreement between Iran and Armenia on this matter—we are completely aligned in our stance.”

During his press briefing, Sobhani repeatedly clarified that Iran is not against unblocking regional transportation routes. However, he insisted that any such developments must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states involved.

“We support the unblocking of roads in Armenia, but this must be done under the framework of national sovereignty and territorial integrity. We oppose any road that follows the ‘corridor logic,'” he stressed.

The Iranian ambassador made it clear that Iran is firmly against any initiative that could lead to changes in the Armenia-Iran border. Regarding the so-called “Zangezur Corridor,” he stated that Iran will not engage in negotiations or compromises with any country, as it directly concerns Iran’s national security.

When asked whether Iran has disagreements with Russia on this issue, Sobhani responded:

“We have clearly conveyed our stance to Russia and other countries. We oppose any road under international control, as well as any initiative that alters existing borders or leads to geopolitical shifts. We have made this explicitly clear and will not consider any country’s concerns in this matter. Some nations have attempted to spread doubts about Iran’s stance, claiming that we have compromised on Zangezur. However, Zangezur is directly tied to our national security, and we remain steadfast in our position—no matter which country is involved.”

Armenia Assures Iran: U.S. Strategic Partnership Document Not Targeted at Tehran

Armenian authorities have made it clear to Iran that the recent strategic partnership document signed between Yerevan and Washington is not directed against Tehran, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani stated on Thursday.

During a press briefing, Sobhani emphasized that Armenia has assured Iran it will take no actions that could harm Armenian-Iranian relations or jeopardize Tehran’s interests.

“There is a strong mutual understanding between the Armenian and Iranian authorities on this matter,” he said. “Both sides recognize that our bilateral relations are developing in a way that benefits the peoples of both nations.”

This shared perspective, according to Sobhani, continues to strengthen the partnership between Tehran and Yerevan. Despite ongoing U.S. pressure on Iran, he noted that the two countries have consistently maintained and developed their relations.

This mutual understanding, Sobhani noted, allows strengthening bilateral relations.

In his assessment, against the background of the maximum pressure of the United States on Iran, Tehran and Yerevan have always managed to develop relations.
