YEREVAN  — On December 13, the American University of Armenia (AUA) hosted the presentation and signing of From Earthquake Tragedy to Beacon of Light: The Story of the American University of Armenia, a new book authored by AUA co-founder, President Emeritus and Trustee Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian. Published by AUA Press, under the direction of Shushan Avagyan, the book chronicles the University’s 30-year journey of founding, growth, challenges, and achievements.

In attendance were alumni, faculty, staff and students, representatives of other higher educational institutions, and guests. The event began with opening remarks from AUA President Dr. Bruce Boghosian, who welcomed attendees and emphasized the significance of the book. “This book is far more than a simple recounting of dates and events. It is a testament to the spirit, perseverance, and vision that have shaped the American University of Armenia into the institution it is today,” he noted. Dr. Boghosian expressed gratitude to Dr. Der Kiureghian for preserving AUA’s legacy, stating, “This book reminds us of the power of collective effort and the importance of looking back to understand where we are today — and where we aspire to go tomorrow. Your work will stand as a cornerstone for reflection and growth, a gift to all of us who hold this University close to our hearts.”

Dr. Boghosian then invited AUA Assistant Vice President of Operations, Anahit Ordyan, one of the University’s first graduates, to share her reflections. Ordyan, who had the opportunity to read an early draft of the book, described it as an inspiring narrative of AUA’s evolution. “Chapter after chapter, I learned so many new details about the heroic journey of AUA since its inception,” she remarked. Highlighting the University’s transformative impact, she added, “Every time I walk across the Bridge and look at the Changemakers Wall, I think about how AUA itself has been a true changemaker. This book captures the University’s incredible history.”

Following these remarks, Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian and AUA Provost Dr. Alina Gharabegian, who is also the main editor of the book, sat down for a reflective discussion. Dr. Gharabegian remarked, “This is a transformative book. At least it was that way for me. The book encapsulates the 30 plus years of the University’s existence and absolutely brings that to life. When you have read the book, you can’t help but feel the history.”

During the discussion, Dr. Der Kiureghian elaborated on the inspiration behind the book, the challenges of building an American-style university in post-Soviet Armenia, AUA’s accomplishments throughout the years, and the importance of community. “A university like this doesn’t just happen overnight. It takes time to build, to evolve, and to overcome challenges — not only the physical hardships of no electricity, no power, and no water, but also the task of creating an institution that educates a new generation in a country far from where its model originated,” he said.

When asked what makes AUA a “beacon of light,” as reflected in the book’s title, Dr. Der Kiureghian elaborated, “AUA brings a different way of thinking, a different way of education, and a different way of working. It fosters not only the freedom to express one’s opinion but also the responsibility to substantiate it with evidence.” He underscored that the commitment to cultivating innovative thinkers and ethical leaders has been central to AUA’s mission since its founding, making it a transformative force in education and society.

Dr. Der Kiureghian remarked that the book not only showcases the University’s achievements, but also the challenges that were faced, the shortcomings identified, and the ways in which they were overcome and addressed.

Throughout the conversation, Dr. Der Kiureghian also emphasized the collective effort behind AUA’s legacy and the significance of documenting these contributions in the book. He highlighted the resilience and dedication of students, faculty, staff, and donors as critical to the University’s success, with special recognition given to the first cohort of students who persevered despite the hardships in living conditions, limited resources and infrastructure.

Dr. Der Kiureghian wrapped up the discussion by expressing a heartfelt gratitude to those who supported the creation of his book.

At the end of the event, Dr. Der Kiureghian answered questions from the audience. This was followed by a book-signing session, during which attendees had the opportunity to interact with the author personally.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Der Kiureghian also participated in AUA Media Lab’s Focus Series podcast alongside AUA Provost Dr. Alina Gharabegian, during which they discussed the inspiration behind the book and reflected on the University’s legacy.
