YEREVAN – The Armenian Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports is collaborating with leading Italian specialists to restore the bathhouse of Garni Temple.
In 2019, Italian architect Lucio Speca, a specialist in restoration work, prepared and submitted to the Ministry a Project for the Valuation and Restoration of the Garni Bath, which outlines plans to reinforce and restore the mosaic, as well as replace the covering with modern architectural solutions.
Recognizing the significance of the Garni Temple and Bath, and the methodology proposed in the project, an agreement was reached in 2024 for the mosaic’s restoration by the L’Opificio delle Pietre Dure Institute, with support from the Italian Embassy in Armenia. This institute, a specialized branch of the Italian Ministry of Culture, focuses on the research and restoration of monumental art.
As part of the project, specialists from the institute conducted on-site measurements in 2024. A follow-up visit is scheduled for April-May 2025 to continue the work and collect test samples. The full-scale restoration of the mosaic and the replacement of the covering will commence in 2025.
