BRUSSELS — French ­Armenian legendary singer Charles Aznavour has become Commander of the Order of the Crown, one of Belgium’s highest awards bestowed on him by King Philip on the proposal of Foreign Minister Didier Reynders.

Aznavour was decorated with the order on November 16 in Brussels Egmont Palace. The ceremony was held under special circumstances due to the emotion aroused by the attacks that bloodied Paris Friday. The participants held a minute’s silenceduring the ceremony to honour the memory of the victims

Aznavour thanked Belgium which according to the singer “Has always had a wonderful audience”. Belgium Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders spoke about Aznavour’s high qualities.

In 2004, when Aznavour celebrated his 80th anniversary, he was proclaimed officer of the Order of Leopold for “the unique and long-lasting career and unquestionable quality”, as well as for his work as a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO and for his invaluable role as a defender of French language.

The Order of the Crown is awarded for services rendered to the Belgian state, especially for meritorious service in public employment. The Order of the Crown is also awarded for distinguished artistic, literary or scientific achievements, or for commercial or industrial services in Belgium or Africa.
