SKOPJE – Armenia’s national team has recorded outstanding results at the European U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship, taking place in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, and currently leads the team standings.
The standout performer of the tournament was 77 kg wrestler Samvel Terteryan, who had a remarkable run on his way to the championship title. The Armenian wrestler proved his absolute superiority throughout the tournament, competing flawlessly and not conceding a single point to his opponents.
Terteryan began his campaign with a confident 9-0 victory over Austria’s Lars Matti. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Moldova’s Nikita Apostol by the same score, 9-0. In the semifinals, Sweden’s Ruben Strakeved also failed to withstand the Armenian wrestler’s pressure, losing 8-0.
In the decisive bout for the championship title, Terteryan faced Azerbaijan’s Javidan Nakhmatov. The Armenian athlete once again performed flawlessly, winning 4-0 and deservedly claiming the gold medal. Notably, Samvel had also won a silver medal earlier this season at the European U23 Championship.
Armenia’s other results after the first finals were as follows:
Silver medalists: Edgar Petrosyan in the 55 kg weight category and Alex Margaryan in the 63 kg weight category both reached the finals and became runners-up of the tournament.
Bronze medalist: Yurik Petrosyan, competing in the 87 kg weight category, defeated Romania’s Gabriel Stan 4-1 in the bout for third place.
Thanks to these achievements, Armenia’s national team has earned 88 points and currently leads the team standings, ahead of Russia with 80 points and Azerbaijan with 75 points.
