YEREVAN — For the first time in its post-independence history, Armenia will have an ambassador to Pakistan.

By decree of Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan, Karen Grigoryan has been appointed Armenia’s ambassador to Pakistan on a concurrent basis.

“Karen Grigoryan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to the United Arab Emirates, shall be appointed, on a concurrent basis, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, with residence in Abu Dhabi,” the presidential decree states.

Armenia and Pakistan established diplomatic relations in August 2025 through the signing of a joint communiqué. According to the communiqué, the governments of the two countries seek to develop friendly relations in accordance with the UN Charter, including the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.

Until then, Pakistan had not recognized the Republic of Armenia and had no diplomatic relations with Yerevan. The main reason for Pakistan’s position was the long-standing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh. Pakistan is an ally of Azerbaijan, and Pakistani leaders had repeatedly stated that they would not recognize Armenia until the Karabakh issue was fully settled in Azerbaijan’s favor.
