BRUSSELS — The European Union has condemned any attempt by Russia to exert pressure on Armenia.
“As a sovereign, democratic, and independent country, Armenia has every right to choose its own path and its own partners,” EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said.
The spokesperson accused Russia of attempting to harm Armenia’s economy and influence the outcome of Armenia’s parliamentary elections.
“Brussels will continue supporting Armenia in overcoming such attempts at coercion,” he added.
Last week, Moscow recalled its ambassador to Armenia for consultations. Russian President Vladimir Putin also criticized Armenia’s growing ties with the European Union and called for a referendum to be held “as soon as possible” on whether Armenia should align with the EU or remain within the Eurasian Economic Union.
In recent days, Russia has also imposed a series of restrictions on imports of Armenian beverages, flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
