YEREVAN — Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced that the border delimitation process between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan will continue and be completed within a reasonable timeframe. He made the statement on April 27 during an event marking the establishment day of the National Security Service’s Border Guard Troops.
Pashinyan noted that approximately 12 kilometers of the Armenia–Azerbaijan border in the Tavush region have already been delimited over the past two years, where Armenia’s border guard troops are currently serving.
“That 12-kilometer section is perhaps the only part of the Armenia–Azerbaijan border where representatives of the armed forces of both countries serve without helmets, without body armor, and with their rifle magazines not attached to their weapons but kept in their bags,” the Prime Minister said.
According to Pashinyan, the goal is for all sections of Armenia’s border to fall under the responsibility of border guard troops. In his view, border guards symbolize peace, as their presence on the border generally indicates a peaceful situation.
“When we say the border will be delimited and demarcated, our intention is to allow our servicemen to carry out their duties at permanent deployment locations. We often overlook this nuance, but for decades our army has spent much of its service in trenches,” he added.
