KALDAS NOVAS, BRAZIL — Armenian chess player GM Samvel Ter-Sahakian won the first prize at the World Youth Chess Championship below the age of 18 held in the Brazilian city of Kaldas Novas. Russian Vladimir Fedoseev and Indian Das Debakhis were placed second and third respectively.
Samvel Ter-Sahakian earned a total of eight points. He had 7 victories in 9 rounds, two rounds ended in a draw. He was the vice-champion in the same group last year.
Robert Aghasarian, playing at the same age category ended his game with Erik Rozen from US at draw at the last round and took the 14th place with six points.
In the championship under the age of 16, Karen Grigorian, who was considered the main favorite, lost to his Iranian rival Idani Powai and took the 14th place with six points.
Of all the 104 participants to this championship Karen Grigorian had the highest rating.
Hovhannes Gabuzian, playing at the same category showed good performance, by beating Denis Kadric from Bosnia at the last round and taking the forth place with 6.5 points.
