YEREVAN — Armenia’s national football team opened its 2026/27 UEFA Nations League campaign with a victory on September 25, defeating Latvia at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in Yerevan in the opening round of League C.
Georgi Harutyunyan opened the scoring in the 31st minute of the first half, finding the net following a corner kick. Eduard Spertsyan provided the assist.
Armenia doubled its advantage in the 76th minute through Artur Gharibyan, who scored shortly after coming on as a substitute in his debut for the national team.
Erik Simonyan entered the match in the 82nd minute, also making his debut for Armenia. Armenian-origin footballer Alberts Aleksanyans, meanwhile, made his debut for Latvia.
No further goals were scored, and Armenia secured the victory to begin its 2026/27 Nations League campaign on a positive note under head coach Yeghishe Melikyan.
The result ended Armenia’s seven-match winless streak and marked the team’s first victory of 2026. Armenia also kept a clean sheet for the first time in 40 matches.
Armenia, Latvia, Montenegro and Cyprus are competing in Group 2. The group’s other opening-round match, between Montenegro and Cyprus, is scheduled to take place later in the day.
Armenia will next host Montenegro on September 28 at 8:00 p.m., before playing away matches against Cyprus and Montenegro.
