YEREVAN — The Institute for Economics and Peace has released the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), ranking Armenia 51st among 163 countries with a score of 1.825, an improvement of 21 places from the previous year.
According to the 2026 GPI, Armenia recorded one of the largest improvements in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, with its overall score improving by 4 percent.
Armenia, which ranks 51st globally and sixth in the region, improved largely due to a 9.3 percent improvement in the Safety and Security domain.
The indicator measuring violent demonstrations improved by 42.9 percent, while the political terror scale improved by 33.3 percent. The Ongoing Conflict domain also registered a modest improvement of 1.8 percent.
The report notes that Armenia’s improved ranking reflects the broader process of normalizing relations with Azerbaijan following decades of conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Despite progress related to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijan recorded the largest deterioration in the region in the 2026 GPI, with its overall score worsening by 3.3 percent.
Azerbaijan ranks 110th globally and 11th in the region. Its decline was primarily attributed to the Ongoing Conflict domain, where its score deteriorated by 12.2 percent.
Georgia recorded a modest 1 percent deterioration, falling to 94th place globally and 10th in the region.
Turkey recorded one of the largest improvements in the region in the 2026 GPI, with its overall score improving by 4.1 percent. It ranks 136th globally and 13th in the region.
