YEREVAN — Armenia plans to introduce automated e-gate systems at its border checkpoints alongside the implementation of biometric passports.
On August 17, Interior Minister Arpine Sargsyan, accompanied by Deputy Director of the National Security Service Davit Sanamyan, visited Zvartnots International Airport to review preparations for the installation of automated e-gate systems.
Officials presented the minister with the infrastructure solutions required for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the e-gate systems.
An e-gate is an automated, contactless border-control system that allows travelers to cross the border quickly by scanning their passports without the direct involvement of a border officer. The system will automatically verify travelers’ identities, streamline border-control procedures, and reduce waiting times.
The officials also discussed the stages of implementation, organization of the work, and the conditions necessary to ensure the efficient and uninterrupted operation of the e-gate systems.
On the same day, the interior minister visited a commercial facility in Yerevan to inspect construction and technical upgrades at a new office of the Interior Ministry’s Migration and Citizenship Service, which is nearing completion.
The importance of maintaining construction quality standards and completing the work within the established deadlines was emphasized.
The minister also issued additional instructions aimed at ensuring the office’s efficient operation once it becomes fully functional.
The offices, being constructed by the Haypass company, are designed according to a “one-stop-shop” model. The project’s logistical and architectural solutions are intended to reduce lines and congestion, simplify administrative procedures, and significantly save citizens’ time.
