Alen Simonyan Appointed Secretary of Armenia’s Security Council, Replacing Armen Grigoryan

YEREVAN — Armen Grigoryan has been dismissed from his post as Secretary of Armenia’s Security Council, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced during a government meeting.

By decision of the prime minister, Alen Simonyan has been appointed Secretary of the Security Council.

“Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan is participating in a government meeting in that capacity for the last time, because I have decided to make a change in the position of Security Council secretary,” Pashinyan said.

“Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister, for your kind words, your trust and our cooperation. I would also like to thank all of my colleagues for their work throughout this period. Thank you to everyone. It was a great honor to serve the Republic of Armenia,” Grigoryan said.

Grigoryan had served as Secretary of the Security Council since May 17, 2018. A member of the Civil Contract party, he headed the Security Council for approximately eight years following Armenia’s Velvet Revolution.

Simonyan was elected Speaker of Armenia’s eighth National Assembly on August 2, 2021. Before becoming speaker, he served as deputy speaker of the seventh National Assembly beginning in 2019.

On July 2, 2026, Simonyan announced that he would relinquish the parliamentary mandate he received following the 2026 parliamentary elections.

Simonyan is also a member of the Civil Contract party’s governing board.
