Moscow Tried to Influence Armenian Voters, European Parliament Members Say

BRUSSELS — “The Russian Federation has once again demonstrated that it has no respect for the sovereignty of countries it seeks to bring under its influence,” six members of the European Parliament said in a joint statement on June 11, welcoming Armenia’s parliamentary elections and describing them as properly organized and reflective of the democratic choice of Armenian citizens.

The lawmakers said Moscow attempted to influence Armenian voters through threats, trade restrictions, and disinformation campaigns.

According to the MEPs, those attempts largely failed, while the support shown by the European Union helped Armenia withstand external pressure and allowed citizens to make a free choice.

They called for additional steps to strengthen Armenia’s resilience, including support for economic diversification and the expansion of trade ties with the European Union. The lawmakers also stressed the importance of rapid progress in the visa liberalization process and the swift deployment of the EU’s new Partnership Mission.

Commenting on the election results, the European lawmakers said they reflect Armenia’s choice in favor of peace, regional cooperation, expanded connectivity, and closer relations with the European Union.

They expressed readiness to cooperate with Armenia’s newly elected National Assembly and future government to support the country’s continued democratic and economic development.

The statement concluded with a call to continue dialogue among political forces and ensure broader public participation in post-election processes, emphasizing the importance of strengthening democratic institutions and increasing public trust in democratic governance.
