Pashinyan Responds to Medvedev’s Warning, Says Armenia Will Become Increasingly Sovereign

YEREVAN — Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has responded to remarks by Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev, who warned against Armenia becoming a “new Ukraine,” saying that Armenia has already faced serious security threats without receiving the assistance it expected from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Speaking to reporters, Pashinyan questioned the reasoning behind Medvedev’s statement and recalled Armenia’s previous security challenges.

“Armenia has already faced such a danger and found itself in a situation where the CSTO failed to fulfill its obligations toward Armenia,” Pashinyan said.

The prime minister expressed confusion over Medvedev’s warning, suggesting that similar comparisons could also be made regarding Russia’s own security situation.

“Why does Mr. Medvedev make such statements? One could just as easily say that Armenia should not become a new Russia, considering the explosions occurring in various parts of Russia,” he remarked.

Pashinyan criticized this type of political rhetoric, describing it as an unproductive approach to international relations.

“This is not a good way to conduct such discussions. Armenia will become an increasingly sovereign state,” he emphasized.

Medvedev, a former Russian president who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, had earlier warned that the worst possible outcome would be for Armenia to turn into another Ukraine.

Pashinyan’s response highlighted his government’s position that Armenia must continue strengthening its sovereignty and making independent decisions concerning its security and foreign policy.
