Haigazian University Celebrates Founders’ Day with Reflection on the Enduring Value of University Education

BEIRUT — Haigazian University commemorated its annual Founders’ Day on Monday, October 12, 2026, with a reflection on the enduring value of university education under the theme “Why University Education Today? From Skills to Knowledge, Character, and Responsible Leadership.”

Held at the hall of the First Armenian Evangelical Church adjacent to the University campus, the celebration brought together public officials, academics, corporate leaders, Board members, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the University.

The main program featured a panel moderated by Haigazian University President Rev. Dr. Paul Haidostian, bringing together four perspectives on higher education: public service, the corporate sector, alumni experience, and student life. The discussion examined what distinguishes university education at a time when professional skills and certifications are increasingly accessible through shorter programs and alternative learning pathways.

The panel featured H.E. Dr. Kamal Shehadi, Minister of Displaced and Minister of State for Technology and Artificial Intelligence; Ms. Chirine Salha, Shareholder and EAM at InterContinental Phoenicia Beirut; Ms. Tamador Dallal Kouatly, Haigazian alumna and Regional Manager of Emirates; and Jessie Krikorian, a senior Psychology student at Haigazian University.

Addressing the educational needs of future professionals and leaders, Minister Shehadi emphasized that universities must go beyond imparting knowledge and awarding degrees to cultivate critical thinking, character, and responsible leadership. In an era shaped by artificial intelligence, he stressed the importance of integrating knowledge, professional skills, and ethical values, including the ability to critically assess AI-generated information. He also called for stronger collaboration among the state, universities, and the private sector to prepare graduates for technological change and contribute to a productive digital economy.

From an employer’s perspective, Ms. Salha highlighted the role of university education in preparing hospitality professionals for long-term career development and leadership. Beyond technical competencies, she emphasized the importance of sound judgment, communication, collaboration, and cultural understanding in an industry grounded in human interaction. A university education, she noted, provides a broader foundation for adapting to change and navigating complex professional challenges.

Drawing on her experience in the aviation industry, Ms. Kouatly reflected on four lasting benefits of her university education: stronger critical thinking and intellectual curiosity, broader perspectives, greater self-awareness and confidence, and the development of personal values and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Offering the student perspective, Jessie Krikorian considered why students should invest in a four-year university education when marketable skills can be acquired through shorter programs. While recognizing the value of job-oriented training, she emphasized that university education offers a more comprehensive foundation for personal and professional growth, fostering adaptability, deeper understanding, and the capacity to navigate an evolving world.

In his Founders’ Day address, Rev. Dr. Haidostian reaffirmed the University’s founding mission, emphasizing that its legacy rests not only on its history but also on its commitment to faith, community, lifelong learning, and service to humanity. He stressed that education must extend beyond professional preparation to foster personal growth, integrity, and a commitment to contributing positively to society. Reflecting on Lebanon’s challenges, he highlighted the resilience of its people and expressed gratitude to the University community and its supporters as Haigazian entered its 71st year.

The celebration also connected the University’s present mission with the vision of its founders. Following a prelude on piano by Student Andrew Koumbajian, and an invocation prayer offered by Campus Minister Rev. Wilbert van Saane, attendees viewed a documentary chronicling Haigazian University’s establishment and the initiatives undertaken by its founders.
