Tour of Armenia Cycling Race Begins With 135-Kilometer Opening Stage

YEREVAN — The first competitive day of the international Tour of Armenia multi-stage cycling race began in Gavar and concluded in Mets Masrik, with riders completing a 135-kilometer route through Gegharkunik Province.

The cyclists traveled along the scenic shores of Lake Sevan, beginning from Gavar’s Central Square before continuing along several major highways and passing through communities including Martuni, Tsovagyugh, Shorzha and Vardenis before reaching the finish in Mets Masrik.

On September 11, the race will begin in Kirants in Tavush Province and conclude in Stepanavan, Lori Province.

The September 12 stage will begin in Martuni and continue through several communities and highways in Gegharkunik and Kotayk provinces before entering Tavush Province. On September 13, the competition will continue in Yerevan with a 110-kilometer stage consisting of 10 laps.

Sixteen teams from countries around the world, including Armenia, are participating in the prestigious international cycling competition. Over four days, the cyclists are expected to cover approximately 500 kilometers across Armenia.

Polish cyclist Michal Pomorski was the first to cross the finish line on the opening day, recording an average speed of 52.331 km/h and claiming victory in the first stage.

Medway Fletcher finished second and was named the best young rider at the conclusion of the opening stage, earning the white jersey.
