Armenian Ambassador to U.S. Responds to Question About Joining Efforts to Isolate Iran

WASHINGTON, DC — Armenia’s Ambassador to the United States, Narek Mkrtchyan, has responded to a question from a journalist with The Hill about whether Armenia would consider a U.S. request to join efforts to isolate Iran if such a proposal were made.

The journalist noted that the United States has made similar requests to its allies and partner countries.

“There is no issue in the world that cannot be discussed. Everything is open for discussion,” Ambassador Mkrtchyan responded.

Speaking about the TRIPP project, Mkrtchyan said it could be possible to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the project in early 2027.

At the same time, the ambassador stressed that the project is not directed against any third country, including Iran or Russia.

“We have also communicated this project to our neighbor Iran. Iran is our immediate neighbor. We have an Armenian community there, and we need to have normal relations with Iran, as we always have,” Mkrtchyan said.

“Having a peaceful border with Iran and maintaining friendly relations with Iran are also important for the successful implementation of this project [TRIPP]. We have engaged in dialogue with our neighbors, telling them that this is not directed against them. This is solely about connectivity, infrastructure and trade. It has nothing to do with any potential military operations.”

“We need to continue this dialogue, provide all the details and address their concerns,” Ambassador Mkrtchyan said.
