BRATISLAVA — Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Samvel Terteryan won the gold medal in the 77 kg weight category at the U20 World Wrestling Championships currently underway in Bratislava, Slovakia.
In the final, Terteryan defeated Azerbaijan’s Javidan Nahmatov to claim the world championship title.
Terteryan began his campaign in the qualification round, where he defeated an Egyptian wrestler 9-0. In the round of 16, he recorded a 6-0 victory over an opponent from the United States. He then earned a convincing 5-0 win over a Hungarian wrestler in the quarterfinals before defeating Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili 6-0 in the semifinals.
Armenia’s Yurik Petrosyan won the silver medal in the 87 kg weight category after losing to Japan’s Taizo Yoshida in the final.
Petrosyan began his competition in the round of 16 with an 8-0 victory over a wrestler from Kyrgyzstan. In the quarterfinals, he defeated an Iranian opponent 5-1, before advancing to the final with an 8-1 victory over a Polish wrestler in the semifinals.
