Vladimir Vardanyan Elected Judge of the Constitutional Court

YEREVAN — Former Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, Vladimir Vardanyan, has been elected as a judge of Armenia’s Constitutional Court.

Vardanyan was elected through a secret ballot, with 67 members of parliament participating.

He is expected to take the oath of office on March 26 during a session of the National Assembly before assuming his duties.

Vardanyan stated that he has already suspended his membership in the ruling Civil Contract Party in accordance with Armenian law, and will also cease his parliamentary activities upon assuming the judicial role.

The vacancy in the Constitutional Court arose following the termination of the powers of former judge Hrayr Tovmasyan. In February, a guilty verdict against him came into force, and the Court of Cassation declined to review the appeal filed by his lawyers.

As a result, Tovmasyan, having been convicted of abuse of office, can no longer serve as a Constitutional Court judge.
