EU Says Armenian Prisoners Held in Azerbaijan Must Be Addressed as an Urgent Humanitarian Issue

BRUSSELS — Anitta Hipper, the lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy of the European Union, addressed the issue of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan, reaffirming the EU’s position that this important humanitarian matter must be resolved.

Hipper made the remarks during a regular press briefing while responding to a question from CivilNet.

The journalist asked whether the issue of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan remains on the European Union’s agenda and to what extent the topic is raised during contacts with Azerbaijan.

“As a general point, we support Armenia and Azerbaijan in the peace process,” Hipper said. “We have demonstrated our support and have been working with the parties and international partners for several years to help create the conditions for lasting peace. Regarding the prisoners, we have been clear that these important humanitarian issues must be addressed, including the fate of missing persons and the issue of Armenians held in Azerbaijan.”
