The Term “Corridor” Is Unacceptable to Us: Grigoryan on His Discussion with Hajiyev

DOHA — Armenia’s Secretary of the Security Council, Armen Grigoryan, has reaffirmed that the term “corridor,” used by Azerbaijan to describe the road passing through Armenia’s territory, is unacceptable to the Armenian side.

Grigoryan made the statement during a panel discussion titled “Armenia–Azerbaijan Lasting Peace: The Washington Agreement and the Shared Future,” held as part of a forum in Doha. The discussion was also attended by the Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Hikmet Hajiyev.

“At the Washington summit, the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States signed a document in which this road is referred to as TRIPP. We use this terminology. We are confident that TRIPP will open significant opportunities not only for the region, but also for businesses and countries beyond the region,” Grigoryan said.

During the discussion, Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev stated that the agreement reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington on August 8 regarding transport communication and connectivity is of great importance, noting that in this context Azerbaijan uses the term “Zangezur Corridor.” Continuing his remarks, Hajiyev emphasized that Azerbaijan is aware that the Armenian side has a different approach on this issue, expressing hope that terminology would be the only point of dispute between the two countries.

On August 8 in Washington, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a declaration. Clause 4 of the document, in particular, states:

“The Republic of Armenia shall work with the United States of America and mutually agreed third parties to define the framework for the implementation of the ‘Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity’ (TRIPP) communications project on the territory of the Republic of Armenia.”

Later, the Armenian Prime Minister announced in the National Assembly that construction work on the “Trump Route” is planned to begin in the second half of 2026.

“By the end of this year, we must put all the details on paper. In the first half of 2026, we must finalize the agreements, and in the second half, we must begin construction. This is the plan,” the Prime Minister said.
