Armenian, Turkish Parliament Speakers Discuss Normalization Peace Process in South Caucasus

GENEVA — Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan and Turkish Grand National Assembly Speaker Numan Kurtulmush met in Geneva on Monday.

“On the sidelines of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, I had a meaningful meeting with the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Numan Kurtulmuş. We discussed a wide range of bilateral issues, the peace process in the South Caucasus and the region as a whole. I also presented the ‘’Crossroads of Peace’’ project of the Armenian government. We agreed to continue our contacts in the future,” Simonyan wrote on his FB.

At the end of the meeting, the parties reached an agreement to continue contacts.

In an address to the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Simonyan said that Armenia and Azerbaijan are on the cusp of an accord.

He reminded that when the peace process started months ago, Azerbaijan wanted Armenia’s agreement on five internationally recognized points. “I am pleased to announce that to date, we have agreed on 16,” Simonyan said.

“The perfect must no longer be the enemy of the good. The time to make peace has come. The time for peace is now. We invite Azerbaijan to mւster the political will, seize the moment and join us to make the possible a reality,” the Speaker stated.

He reaffirmed that Armenia is ready to sign a peace treaty even today.
