Renewable Energy in Armenia by Tamara Babayan

PASADENA — Dr Tamara Babayan, Director of Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund of Armenia, will be presenting a lecture on Renewable Energy in Armenia on Thursday, July 28, 2016, 7:30 pm at 100 W. Walnut Street, Pasadena, CA 91124. This event is presented by Armenian Engineers and Scientists of America (AESA).

Armenia has no proven oil or natural gas reserves and imports all of its fuel for thermal generation from Russia and Iran. The country relies on imported natural gas to generate roughly 30 percent of its power and heating. Nuclear fuel, which is used to generate another 30 percent of electricity in Armenia, is also imported. The historic threats to supply security and affordability are expected to continue in Armenia. Therefore, the Government’s commitment to developing renewable energy remains strong and there is now more urgency, given a looming gap between supply and demand.

The presentation will cover all aspects of renewable energy development in Armenia, including resource assessment, policy and regulations, investment opportunities, and near future perspectives for increasing share of renewables in generation mix. Specific attention is given to the Geothermal Exploratory Drilling Project and Solar PV Power Project currently implemented by Armenia Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund (R2E2 Fund). Renewable Energy Investment Plan of Armenia was approved by CIFs to make available funding for installation of 40-50 MW solar power plants.

Ms. Tamara Babayan has been director of the R2E2 Fund of Armenia starting from its establishment in 2005. As a Director of the Fund she has managed number of projects in sustainable energy area, including Renewable Energy Project, Geothermal Energy Project, Urban Heating Project, Energy Efficiency Project, developing the Renewable Energy Road Map for Armenia, etc. She was Director of Heating PIU implementing WB financed projects before joining R2E2.

She is member of the Strategic Climate Fund Committee under the Climate Investment Funds. She served as an expert for Private Sector Set Aside under the Scaling up Renewable Energy Program. Tamara is also member of Energy Efficiency Coordination Group of the Energy Community.

She is graduated from the Yerevan State University Physics Department (Solid State Physics – 1987-1992). She studied Public Administration in 1996-1998.
