YEREVAN (news.am) — Rare Armenian gold coin belonging to the period of ruling of Cilician Armenia king Levon I (1198 – 1219) was sold for $40,000 on online auction, Cngcoins.com writes.
The diameter of the coin is 19.5 mm, its weight being 2.46 g. One side of the coin depicts Levon I enthroned and holding cross in right hand and branch in left. There is a Patriarchal cross flanked by two lions, heads reverted, on the flip side of the coin.
The coin put on the auction was from the “Araratian Collection” of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams. The starting price of the lot was $50,000. The coin was sold last week. The buyer is unknown.
