Presidents of Armenia and Egypt Discuss Closer Ties in Moscow Meeting

MOSCOW — Armenia’s President Serzh Sarkisian met with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Moscow on Saturday, on the sidelines of Victory Day parade.

The presidents discussed issues on bilateral cooperation in political, economic, cultural and other fields, according to Armenian President’s Press Service.

“Both sides attached importance to further development of Armenian-Egyptian relations based on centuries-old friendship and stressed the need to give new impetus to those relations,” Sarkisian’s office said in a statement.

“The president of Egypt expressed confidence that bilateral relations and cooperation will become much more advanced than they were in the past,” added the statement. It said Sisi argued that the political situation in Egypt is stabilizing after years of turmoil.

President Sarkisian expressed hope that the reforms, initiated by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and aimed at the establishment of stability and development in Egypt, will also create grounds for the development of closer ties between the two countries.

The Armenian presidential press service said Sisi and Sarkisian also spoke about ongoing commemorations in and outside Armenia of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in Ottoman Turkey. President Sisi talked about the Armenian community in Egypt with admiration, noting that Armenians have always received brotherly treatment in Egypt.

The presidents emphasized the significant role of the Armenian community in Egypt in strengthening of friendship between the two countries. In this context, the special role of such persons as the Egyptian Armenian politician Nubar Pasha was underscored.
