Armenian Parliament Ratifies Eurasian Economic Union Treaty

YEREVAN — The Armenian parliament has overwhelmingly passed a treaty to join the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) beginning next year.

The vote on December 4 was 103 in favor, seven votes against, and one abstention.

The factions of the Prosperous Armenia Party and the Armenian National Congress, which oppose the government on domestic issues, had stated in advance that they would vote in favor of the EEU membership treaty.

Before being submitted to the National Assembly for ratification, the treaty passed through the Constitutional Court that upheld its correspondence to the country’s Basic Law.

Armenia is set to join Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan in the economic grouping when it comes into force on January 1.

For Armenia to become a member of the EEU, the treaty also has to be ratified by the parliaments of the three founding nations of the emerging economic alliance.
