Renowned Armenian Pianist and Musicologist Şahan Arzruni Dies at 83

NEW YORK — Internationally acclaimed Armenian pianist, musicologist, and cultural ambassador Şahan Arzruni passed away peacefully at his home in New York City on October 21, 2026, at the age of 83, following a period of declining health.

Born on June 8, 1943, in Istanbul, Arzruni demonstrated exceptional musical talent from an early age. Encouraged by his aunt, composer Sirvart Karamanuk, he pursued formal musical training before moving to New York in 1964 to study at The Juilliard School. He subsequently established an internationally distinguished career as a concert pianist, composer, ethnomusicologist, educator, and recording artist.

A Steinway Artist, Arzruni performed extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia. His appearances included performances at the White House, Carnegie Hall, and major international venues. He also gained recognition through television appearances, including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, PBS specials, and collaborations with celebrated entertainer Victor Borge.

Throughout his career, Arzruni remained a passionate advocate for Armenian musical heritage. He devoted decades to researching, performing, and recording works by Armenian composers, including Komitas, Aram Khachaturian, Alan Hovhaness, Arno Babajanyan, Tigran Mansuryan, and Alexander Arutiunian. His recordings and scholarly contributions played a significant role in introducing Armenian classical music to international audiences.

Arzruni was equally committed to nurturing young musicians in Armenia. Beginning in 2017, through the Fund for Armenian Relief, he visited more than 50 communities across Armenia, conducting master classes and performances at music and art schools. He also organized educational and cultural programs in Artsakh.

His contributions earned numerous distinctions, including the Sts. Sahak and Mesrob Medal, awarded by Catholicos Karekin I in 1996, and Armenia’s Movses Khorenatsi Medal in 2016 for outstanding achievements in cultural development.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Arzruni launched the online musical series Together with Armenia, bringing together performers from around the world.

In his final weeks, he worked to complete his memoirs, preserve his extensive archive of recordings and writings, and arrange for the preservation of his personal collections.

Remembered for his exceptional artistry, scholarship, generosity, and lifelong dedication to Armenian culture, Şahan Arzruni leaves an enduring legacy in the international music community and among generations of Armenian musicians.

In accordance with his wishes, his ashes will be interred in the Arzruni family gravesite in Istanbul.

His recordings, writings, and musical archives are available at www.sahanarzruni.com.
