Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan Awarded 2026 Hessian Peace Prize

WIESBADEN — Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has been named the recipient of this year’s Hessian Peace Prize in recognition of his commitment to democracy and efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the longstanding conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Hessian State Parliament announced the award on Thursday, noting that since taking office in 2018, Pashinyan has pursued democratic reforms and sought to strengthen Armenia’s ties with Europe.

Armenia, historically a close ally of Russia, has increasingly moved toward closer relations with the European Union under Pashinyan’s leadership. Since 2025, Armenia’s goal of pursuing EU membership has also been formally enshrined in law.

The 51-year-old former journalist is also being recognized for his approach to the decades-long conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, which resulted in repeated military confrontations and wars.

In August 2025, Armenia and Azerbaijan reached a U.S.-brokered peace agreement, marking a significant step toward normalizing relations between the two countries.

Hessian State Parliament President Astrid Wallmann, a member of the Peace Prize Board of Trustees, said the award recognizes the progress achieved in the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process.

She said the prize sends “a visible signal for understanding and the development of non-violent perspectives for conflict resolution.”

Pashinyan is scheduled to receive the award during a ceremony at the Hessian State Parliament in Wiesbaden on September 18.

Pashinyan rose to prominence as one of the leaders of Armenia’s 2018 Velvet Revolution, when tens of thousands of people participated in largely peaceful demonstrations against the government. The protests led to the resignation of then-Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan, after which Pashinyan was elected prime minister by parliament.

His Civil Contract party subsequently won parliamentary elections and has remained the country’s leading political force.

Karl Starzacher, former president of the Hessian State Parliament and chairman of the Peace Prize Board of Trustees, praised Pashinyan’s commitment to diplomacy and non-violence.

According to Starzacher, Pashinyan’s approach as head of government — favoring diplomacy and political negotiations over further military escalation — demonstrates political courage and foresight and makes him particularly deserving of the Hessian Peace Prize.

The Hessian Peace Prize carries a €25,000 award and is presented by the Albert Osswald Foundation. Established in 1993 and named after former Hessian Minister-President Albert Osswald, the prize honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to international understanding and peace.
