‘Trump Routh’ Could Affect Armenia’s EAEU Membership, Says Russian Ambassador

YEREVAN — Russia is closely monitoring developments surrounding the Armenian–U.S. initiative announced in Washington, titled “Trump Routh” for International Peace and Prosperity,” Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin said in an interview with Noev Kovcheg.

According to Kopyrkin, at this stage only the name of the initiative is known, while no information is available about concrete practical steps. He noted that Russia’s position will become clearer once the initiative acquires specific content, stressing that it could affect Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union, as the transit of goods through Armenia’s territory is also regulated by EAEU legislation.

The ambassador added that Russia supports the unblocking of transport links in the South Caucasus, but emphasized that such processes must be based on the trilateral agreements reached between the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan in 2020–2022, and must take into account the interests of all countries in the region.

Kopyrkin also commented on Armenia’s relations with the European Union, noting that Moscow is observing Yerevan’s steps toward Europe. At the same time, he reiterated Russia’s position that simultaneous membership in the EAEU and the EU is not possible.

According to the ambassador, Brussels expects Armenia to join anti-Russian sanctions, while the potential economic consequences of such steps, in his view, are not being sufficiently considered within the European Union.
