Armenia to Appoint Defense Attaché to the European Union

YEREVAN — The Armenian Ministry of Defense has approved a decision to appoint a defense attaché to the European Union, citing “significant developments” in Armenia’s defense and military cooperation with Belgium and the EU in recent times.

“The support provided to Armenia under the European Peace Facility, the launch of negotiations on Armenia’s participation in EU crisis management missions, and the substantial expansion of the security and defense component in the new Armenia-EU partnership agenda have created favorable conditions for further developing military cooperation with the EU. Additionally, Armenia’s recently initiated military cooperation with Belgium may, in the long run, contribute positively to enhancing Armenia’s defense capabilities and resilience,” the official document states.

According to the proposal, the newly established position of defense attaché to the EU will be held concurrently by Armenia’s existing defense attaché to NATO. As per the government’s decision, this attaché will be responsible for coordinating military and defense cooperation with international organizations.

“The role of the defense attaché within Armenia’s representation to the European Union will facilitate effective cooperation and participation in various discussions. It will also provide an opportunity to present Armenia’s military and geopolitical priorities, as well as its approach to maintaining international peace and security,” the Ministry of Defense emphasized.
