Armenia is Now Closely Working with the EU, Significant Changes in Relations: Nikol Pashinyan

DAVOS — Armenia is currently working closely with the European Union, and significant changes have taken place in Armenia-EU relations over the past year. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made these remarks during a discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

“For example, we have started the visa liberalization process. This agreement has been on our agenda for years, but we were previously unable to even begin negotiations on the matter. I hope we can conclude these negotiations and sign the visa liberalization agreement with the EU as soon as possible.

“Armenia is also involved in the European Peace Facility program, which is very important. Currently, the EU’s civilian observer mission is active in Armenia. We are also progressing with the implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement with the EU,” Pashinyan noted.

Touching on economic ties, the Prime Minister emphasized that Armenia seeks to strengthen economic cooperation with the EU while also aiming to collaborate closely with all countries in the region.

“Unfortunately, since our independence, we have faced a degree of economic isolation due to the closed borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan, which remain closed to this day. As part of global changes, we have proposed the ‘Crossroads of Peace’ initiative, which you are already familiar with. This initiative aims to make regional transportation more efficient, creating new opportunities for both Turkey and Azerbaijan, while also deepening cooperation with Iran and Georgia,” the Prime Minister said.

According to Pashinyan, the initiative is also advantageous for the EU, as its realization would create new transport links between Armenia and the EU. This, he added, is not just an economic issue but also contains a significant security component, which is crucial for comprehensive stability.

Armenia continues to work toward establishing peace with Azerbaijan, Pashinyan remarked during the World Economic Forum.

“People ask me if I am optimistic or pessimistic, and I answer that I am realistic, understanding that we must work until the issue is resolved. The most important thing is to stay committed to the peace agenda, so we must focus on achieving the main goal and work tirelessly, naturally expecting the support of the international community. We hope to receive that support,” Pashinyan stated.
