Homage Paid in Yerevan to Victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bombings

YEREVAN (Armenpress) — A ceremony dedicated to the memory of victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic bombings was held in Yerevan at the Peace Covenant Memorial, initiated by the “Hikari” center.

UN Resident Coordinator of Armenia Bradley Busetto, Ambassador of Japan to Armenia Eiji Taguchi, Advisor of Yerevan Mayor Vano Vardanyan and others were present at the ceremony.

“In May, for the first time, as US President, Barack Obama visited Hiroshima. The Japanese people highly appreciated this and supported his “World without nuclear weapon” initiative, underscoring his speech, that now mankind has the measures to eliminate it. Japan is the first country in history to have suffered from atomic bombings, also the only country to be bearing the consequences for 71 years, however I hope, that it will remain the only country to have suffered from atomic bombings: no more Hiroshima”, the Japanese Ambassador said.

Japanese tourists also joined the ceremony.

“I really respect the fact that one more country knows our history, I respect those people who attempt to affirm peace by respecting the memory of our victims”, Sani Kamia, a Japanese tourist told Armenpress.

On August 9 and 9, 1945, at the end of World War II, the US Armed Forces dropped nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Around 90-166 thousand died in Hiroshima, and 60-80 in Nagasaki.
