YEREVAN. – A memorial depicting a woman with a child on her lap, and which eternalizes the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Yezidis in Shangal (Sinjar) province in northern Iraq, was unveiled Thursday in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan .

“The woman symbolizes the Homeland, and the child—the Yezidi people,” Amo Sharoyan, chairman of Armenia’s ‘“Midia-Shangal’ Yezidi National Union” NGO Board, told reporters during the event.

The unveiling ceremony brought together Armenian MPs; Polish Ambassador Jerzy Marek Nowakowski; Ambassador Piotr Switalski, Head of the European Union Delegation to Armenia; and the representatives of international Yezidi organizations.

In August 2014, the Yezidi population in Sinjar province of Iraq was exterminated en masse by the militants of the Islamic State terrorist organization.
